Why Progress, Not Perfection, Matters in My GLP-1 Journey..

Updated: Mar 5

At the end of the holiday season, a lot of us are drawn to the 'New Year, New You' call to arms. But if there’s one thing I’ve learned on my weight loss journey with GLP-1 medications, it’s that lasting change isn’t about becoming a whole new person—it’s about embracing progress over perfection.

Looking back over the last couple of years, I am struck by the amount of progress that I have made, the lessons that I have learned and the areas in which I am still working.

A Look Back: My Journey with GLP-1 Medications

In October 2022, I started on Mounjaro (Tirzepatide), and my life began to change. By the first time, I experienced that I had a tool that entirely fit me. After many years of battling weight and cyclic dieting, GLP-1 medications provided me with the stability to stay focused and achieve measurable change.

When the Mounjaro coupon expired, compounded Tirzepatide became available and was much more affordable. I immediatley made the switch because there was no way I was going to pay the $1150/month that the pharmacy was quoting me to stay on name-brand Mounjaro! I eventually transitioned to Zepbound, thanks to the assistance of my telehealth provider, IVIM Health, who helped me get approved through my insurance. I've had to switch back and forth a couple of times due to the unreliability of Zepbound's availability. However, the compounded version of my GLP-1 medications has always been available and is even more convenient since it gets delivered to my doorstep!

With the help of these medications and the lifestyle changes I've adopted, I've lost over 60 pounds—a milestone I'm extremely proud of.

The Power of Community

Perhaps the least expected, yet the most gratifying aspect of this experience has been the discovery of a supportive community via IVIM Health. At times weight-loss on GLP-1 therapy can feel too much, but the combination of caring and professional help from an expert team, and the support of peers in a supportive community group made all the difference. IVIM has been more than a resource; it’s been a source of encouragement, accountability, and empowerment.

What I’d Do Differently...

Looking back, there are several things I wish I had done differently:

•    Started Sooner: I spent years stuck in cycles of self-doubt and ineffective dieting before finding GLP-1s. I wish I had sought out solutions earlier instead of feeling like I had to do it all on my own.

•    Focused Less on Perfection: In the beginning, I often felt frustrated when I didn’t see immediate results or had setbacks. As time went on, I learned that it is more important to be consistent than to be perfect. Progress, no matter how small, is still progress.

•    Prioritized Self-Compassion: If only I had been more gentle with myself at the beginning of the experience. The negative self-talk wasn’t productive and only made the process harder.

Looking Ahead: My Health Goals for 2025

Although I'm happy with the progress I've made, there is still room to improve. Here are a few goals I’m working toward in the new year:

1.    Building Strength: I wish to increase the amount of strength training in my plan in order to gain muscle and general fitness.

2.    Improving Nutrition: While GLP-1s have helped me manage hunger and cravings, I’m focusing on creating sustainable, nutrient-rich eating habits.

3.    Prioritizing Mental Health: Emotional well-being is a big part of the puzzle, and I’m making it a priority to manage stress and practice mindfulness.

Why I’m Avoiding the “New Year, New You” Trap

The notion of a "new you" can seem encouraging, but is frequently accompanied by superficial idealism. I’m not starting over this January—I’m continuing the work I’ve already been doing. This attitude change has enabled me to approach sustainable practices in place of quick fixes.

The truth is, we don’t need to reinvent ourselves every year. Rather, we can think about our achievements, acknowledge our successes, and aim to reach meaningful targets that extend the platform we have already established.

Progress Over Perfection

If there’s one thing I’ve learned on this journey, it’s that progress isn’t linear, and perfection isn’t the goal. The small, consistent steps I’ve taken over the past year have added up to meaningful change—and that’s something worth celebrating.

As we head into the new year, I hope to inspire others to approach their health and wellness journeys with self-compassion, patience, and a commitment to progress over perfection. No matter how far you are on your journey, know that each step taken is counted.
